Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a seventh grade English Language Arts teacher in East Harlem struggling to teach my students about the world outside their neighborhood. By reading Teen Newsweek every week I hope to engage my students in discussions about what is going on in the world. While a few students read the newspaper from time to time they need more practice reading nonfiction texts and need to continually be exposed to the benefits of reading. In addition to Teens Newsweek, Career World is another magazine my students would benefit from reading every week. While some students have ideas about their future they need to be exposed to more experiences to motivate them to succeed in school. Half of my students want to play in the NBA and while I don't doubt their skills I want them to come up with back up plans. These career plans will be a great springboard for various research/writing projects that students will actually be invested in. I desperately want to expose my students to various types of nonfiction that will engage them in exciting conversations and motivate them to complete meaningful assignments.
