My school is located in northwest Denver. My diverse class comes from varied backgrounds. Some students live with extended family and depend on support from community outreach programs. Other students speak English as their second language and strive to strengthen their communication skills.
The one common thread that ties my class together is their eagerness to learn new things.
We believe strongly that we are crew, not passengers, so all of my students take an active role in their academic journey.
My Project
One major challenge when helping students with mathematics is finding creative ways for them to become engaged. Often when students aren't able to connect with the math they shy away from it. So how do I make math meaningful for my students?
My students would love a subscription for DynaMath magazines!
These Scholastic magazines are specifically written for third through fifth grade students. DynaMath issues contain numerous, intriguing articles related to math. Articles explore topics like current events, culture, science, and art. Each article demonstrates how people in the real world use math everyday. This will help my students understand why math is so important. DynaMath also includes several math problems students can solve and strategies they can explore. These are a great opportunity for students to work collaboratively as they try out new skills. With your support I can transform my math class and make it Dyna-mite!
