Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students will enter kindergarten this year and many did not go to preschool or have any type of educational experience.
Over ninety-seven percent of students at my school are categorized as socioeconomically disadvantaged.
This means most students experience significant challenges outside of school.
Despite the challenges they face, my students have the desire and capability to learn. I look forward to continuing to create meaningful teaching experiences that will be the basis for which they learn for the rest of their lives.
My Project
Thank you for considering my project! I am requesting magazine subscriptions for a year across varying subjects to add to our classroom library.
Magazines are an important form of media for students to be exposed to and the varying subjects will ensure we have at least one for each student to enjoy.
I chose nonfiction magazines like Zoodinos, Zootles, Ranger Rick Jr, National Geographic Little Kids, and Animal Tales. I also chose fiction magazines like the classic Highlights High Five, and Ladybug. These magazines include a year of issues from 9 to 12 and they will be reused for future kindergarten classes. Students will benefit from these magazines because they will be able to interact with a different type of text that will build their background knowledge and vocabulary. I plan on using these when students are doing their independent reading where they get to choose classroom books to put in their book boxes. I would like to include magazines in their choices.
