Can you imagine what it would be like to have to sit in an 11th or 12th grade English class knowing that you hate reading? This is a huge problem in my classroom because my students are such reluctant readers.
Students at our school have, in the past, struggled in traditional school environments.
At our school, 82% of our students qualify for the free-reduced cost national food program and 60% are involved with the Department of Children and Families. The average student is 4-6 grade levels behind where they should be in reading. At our school, students formerly reluctant to attend school and participate in normal school and extra-curricular activities are being revitalized and re-energized. They have the desire to learn, excel, graduate and continue their education.
My Project
Having the subscription to these magazines would help the students in my classroom because in each of the monthly magazine there are articles that will be both interesting and easy for them to read. Gone are the days of boring, printed out or copied articles from news papers they will never read and in come the fun, informative and interesting articles from a magazine written for someone their age.The Scholastic magazines are perfect for the older students who read at a lower level, where the Upfront magazine challenges the higher level readers in my classroom.
The subscriptions to these magazines will make a difference because it will provide something different for the reluctant readers of my classroom to read.
Even if my students only read one or two articles from the magazine and talk about them with each other after they have completed their regular classwork, they are still reading, and hey, isn't that the overall goal?
