Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4th grade students are an insightful, active and spunky bunch from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. They are increasingly interested in the arts, computer science, and learning about the world around them. When we go on field trips to museums and historical sites or even read about facts from around the world, their focus, attention and curiosity is full of energy and excitement. Learning becomes fun and their minds absorb the information hungrily. They make incredible connections to their own lives as well as to what they have learned.
The children's excitement is tangible and they are extremely eager to learn about the world outside of their neighborhood; Many students have not even ventured to the city.
Our school is a barrier free environment. We are a Title I school and the majority of our budget goes to professional development and core resources. Any extra resources for the classroom is difficult to come by.
Every child learns differently and every mind is a gift. My goal as an educator is to enhance every child's learning experience utilizing multiple, fun and enriching hands-on materials. This allows the learning experience for the children to be broader and less generic.
My Project
Teaching nonfiction can be difficult when resources are limited. Scholastic News and Time for Kids are highly engaging and visual for my students. They help expose students to a variety of topics with appealing photographs and captivating headlines and facts. Scholastic news format is appealing for all readers. It allows the range of readers in my classroom to read what interests them. Best of all, students can take these magazines home and share their findings with their parents.
These magazines will help my students engage with current events and happenings around the world outside their neighborhood!
Our classroom does not have enough computers or ipads for students to access current events and news online. Many students do not have internet access at home. Scholastic News and Time for Kids will be used to help develop students reading comprehension.
