Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My evolving school library serves an eager to learn and inquisitive student population of almost 700 amazing students from PreK- 5th. We are a Title I school with a 100% free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch population. Our transiency rate is roughly 39.1% which is significantly higher than the district average. Our ELL population is almost 50%. We have primary & intermediate resource classes, & three self-contained special education programs-primary autism class, intermediate LIF, & intermediate STAR (Severe Emotional Challenges) classes. Embedded in all learning for our readers is that, above all else, our differences & diversity, who we are & how we learn, are to be celebrated & shared. Students are encouraged to follow their passions, to believe in themselves, to use their strengths, and to look out for each other.
The 4 Cs of Library - Community, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Create drive all of our Library Lessons- both print & digital.
The 4 Cs are intertwined skills that students need to be successful now & wherever life takes them.
WISER is the guiding acronym in our library instruction. It stands for wonder, investigate, synthesize, express, and reevaluate.
My Project
I am blessed to teach every student in our building. This is over 650 students of different levels and interest. While each grade level has different Library Standards, they all require a mixture of fiction and nonfiction for instruction.
This project will allow students from all grades to be able to learn about how to read nonfiction texts, reinforce nonfiction text features, as well as stay up on current events, and take the magazine home to build their home libraries with magazines!
Students love when they walk in to Library and there are Scholastic News Magazines on the tables for lessons. They know they will all be leaving Library with a cool magazine they can reread and share at home.
