I teach at a therapeutic, special education school serving approximately one hundred and two students who have been unable to succeed in a community school setting due to intense emotional, behavioral and academic needs. One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch, making our school one of the highest poverty schools in the district.
Despite so many hardships, my students are incredible children with boundless potential.
Their resiliency, love for learning and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming community to help my students grow into productive citizens.
My Project
My students need these high-interest magazines to keep them engaged in reading! We are looking for materials to keep students reading- using a variety of different formats
Each day, my students have independent reading time; we are desperate to get students to read anything!
We are trying to get our students to read 30 minutes a day- some of them need a variety of materials to read- if we can get our students to read something, anything, for those 30 minutes- we are at least getting them reading! Our independent reading time and reading groups are struggling, and we need the right stuff to keep our kids engaged and moving up their reading levels.
My students need high-interest materials to get them reading- and a variety of materials to read besides a traditional book. Students need to learn to read magazines, newspapers, dictionaries- and other reading materials as well! Nearly all of our students read below grade-level due to their behaviors and related needs. Although most of them are in 6th through 12th grade, they need high-interest materials to keep them interested in reading. In talking with the other reading teacher, and students, we have come up with ideas to get students reading any sort of reading material- and these subscriptions will help reach all students interests!
Many of students are reading below grade level because they simply hate reading- we are desperate to get them to read in any way possible! Keeping them engaged is the best way to ensure that we are moving them forward!
The magazines I've requested will allow my struggling readers to grow in their literacy knowledge and reach their full academic potential!
