Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade at Belmont-Cragin School in Chicago. 28 of 31 students in my classroom are English Language Learners (ELLs). I would like to add magazines to my classroom library in order to help my students learn to read informational text and to instill a love of reading in my students.
My students will love this addition to our library. The few age-appropriate magazines I have been able to bring into the classroom have been devoured by my students. I would like to encourage students to read many different types of text. Magazines are great for ELLs because the articles include pictures, which students use as a tool for comprehension. I also see my students thirsting for more informational text, and because magazines bring in new information every month, even reluctant readers are sure to find something that interests them. I hope to interest students in the content areas of social studies and science by bringing timely information into the classroom. I would like to provide a wide variety of reading material for my students.
For this, I will need subscriptions to a variety of children's magazines. I will also need a classroom subscription to Scholastic News in order to teach my students the strategies they need to read and enjoy the magazines in our library.
I am sure that the addition of magazines in my classroom will achieve three things: instill a love of reading in my students, aid in the comprehension of informationl text (especially for my ELLs), and increase knowledge in the content area. I hope to get my reluctant readers reading magazines. Thank you!
