My students are third graders who come from a predominantly low-socioeconomic homes. They have a thirst for knowledge and learning but unfortunately, not all the resources to do so.
I work with a population of students in which some don't know if they will eat that night.
There is very little chance they are sitting around the dinner table discussing world events. My students need access to a world-class magazine so I may help them make sense of the world around them for the short time I have them in my care. In addition, we have very little resources to give them so they may read non-fiction and strengthen their reading skills so they can compete in society as they grow up. These magazines will help them achieve a level of success in reading so they may go on to be successful in future endeavors.
My Project
We will use the materials everyday as part of our reading curriculum. This will allow students to have access to world events, world cultures, all while reading grade-level appropriate material. Students will engage themselves in the magazine in order to read, write, and discuss what they have learned.
My students need a magazine, Scholastic News, that will allow them access to world events and different cultures.
My project will make a difference in my students' lives as it will give them a more-rounded point-of-view and help them to read interesting non-fiction text. I want their learning experience in the classroom to be relevant to the real world!
