Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Public Charter School on the West side of Chicago in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood. Because all of our students speak Spanish at home, learning English at school is sometimes more challenging for them than it is for students in other areas of the city. As a result, many of these children struggle with reading and writing to a great degree. We are lucky enough to have dedicated teachers who are willing to do whatever it takes to aide these students in their struggle for English literacy -- however, these teachers have found that much of the literature that exists for emerging readers does not have to do with their everyday lives and fails to interest them. As adults, we know that one of the most important ways to get children "hooked" on reading is by tapping into individual interests. Therefore, our school is looking for funds to subscribe to some creative, real-world magazines that will interest our children and help them along on their road to literacy.
The students who will be benefiting most from these magazines are the low-level readers in grades 4 through 8. These students are removed from the rest of their class during the reading period to work in a small group setting with a teacher's assistant. Many of our assistants are eager to help these children achieve, yet are frustrated by the lack of materials and resources available to them. It has become obvious that the basic basal reader does not interest their students! It is my goal to present these teachers with Scholastic magazines in order to help them better service our lower readers. Scholastic News, Storyworks Magazine, and Scholastic Action are the three magazines that I have chosen for these students because I feel that they will tap into their interests and connect to their real life experiences as middle school students and pre-teens.
