This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mrs. Allshouse from Deer Isle ME is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need science books written at their level, to learn about the world around them. These include books from the National Geographic Readers, Gail Gibbons and from the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science Series.

My students are thirsting to know more about how and why the world is the way it is. The only challenge they face is having books at their level to access so they can learn the answers to the multitudes of questions they have.
My students are seven and eight years old.
They are a great group of students that always ask "why?" or "how?". They want to know everything they can about the world. Our school is located on an island in a rural area. The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our school does not receive much state funding as budgets throughout the state have been cut and stretched to their limits. Sadly, the ones that suffer the most are the students. My students come from homes where their parents work hard at minimum wage jobs around the island. The majority of students have parents who fish for a living, which means when winter comes, money is no longer there for purchases other than food and shelter.
My students constantly ask, "How does that work?" or "Why does that happen?" They are desperate to learn about the world around them. They have a multitude of questions, and cannot learn the answers quick enough to satisfy their curiosity. With these books students will be given the opportunity to learn about the world with the reading at their level. Our school uses the Reading Street basal which has a weekly theme that connects to Science or Social Studies. These books will be used to create text sets that are related to the topics we are learning throughout the school year.

Due to the donations, this project will significantly improve my classroom by giving students the opportunity to build their own learning experiences. Students will finally have the opportunity to ask a question, open a book, at their level, and answer their own question. Students will truly become masters of the material they are learning about.
