Janaya and Aunye a senior and a junior, respectively, who have started a book club for girls. They are students at the Historic Charles Sumner High School. Upon reading the book, "The Hate You Give" by Angie Thomas, Janaya and Aunye decided that they wanted to do something to help girls at our school cope with anger and loss. Behavior is a huge problem at our school, many students have loss their peers and family members to death. Their goal is to use books to heal our academic community.
Mad Girls Read is a group of girls who read and discuss issues they face. Our reading sessions are led by our English Teacher and will not only help us to deal with our problems, such as anger and loss, but we will also be working to increase our reading scores. This will help us to score increased scores on tests and increase our GPA.
We are young ladies, who seek an outlet for the problems in our lives that cause anger and hopelessness. We meet once a week and discuss what we are all reading together and how the reading makes us feel, the things we can relate to, and possible solutions to our problems.
We are going to work with our counselors to get community service hours for this project. We are upperclassmen and we are most interested in reading and sharing support with Freshmen and Sophomores. We want to help to mentor them, as well as their grades. We also want to become friends with them, so they will never feel alone.
We have a lot of students, who have lost family members to gun violence and some forget that learning is important. We want to read and journal together to find alternatives to violence at our school and home. Many of our students have very low reading skills. We hope by reading together, we can grow together in many important ways.
