Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with students returning books they have finished reading, and others flocking to our classroom library to see what has been returned, hoping that it is a book they want to read. They are eager to read the newest and latest books that spark their interest.

My students are 7th and 8th graders that come from poverty stricken homes.

Many are English Language Learners and have parents who cannot speak English. Their ability to speak and read English has not impacted their vivaciousness for learning. Several students who only know a little English have gobbled the younger versions of novels we have available. Often, they cannot afford some of the basic necessities to further their learning - such as age appropriate books. Still, many are hungry to read novels that interest them such as the ones requested. They come to class daily hoping their classroom library has been added to and grown. Most of their parents do not place an emphasis on reading at home and therefore, their only chance at reading books is when they come to school and can check a book out from our classroom library.

My Project

These books will be placed in our classroom library and students will be able to check out these novels daily to take home with them. When they are finished reading their book, they check it back in and can select another. They can also use these novels for independent reading in addition to our class novel we are reading and for book reports. Students will be learning vocabulary, worldly knowledge, and enhanced comprehension skills the more books they are able to devour. By discussing their opinions after reading, they can fine tune their speaking and listening skills, as well as perhaps find a recommendation for their next novel to read.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by helping to make teenagers excited to read again.

Their excitement grows each time new books are added to our classroom library and it is truly heartwarming to see their love of reading grow. If you donate, you will be helping turn a student into a lifelong reader.
