I teach first grade in one of the lowest performing schools in District 17, PS 316. We are a Title 1 school where almost 100% of the children are eligible for free lunch. First-grade should be an exciting place that ignites the interest and imagination of all of the children. They should clamor to come to school in the morning. A classroom room has to have a variety of activities and quality materials designed both to hold the children's interests and to ensure their efforts are successful. In addition to writing on paper, the children love to write on their small dry-erase palettes, where mistakes can be easily corrected, and no mark is permanent. We sit on the rug sounding out words together, we use the palettes for math problems, and for word-scavenger hunting around our room. Along with the markers for the children, I desperately need a new dry erase board for myself. The chalkboards are old and cracked, and the large easel-white board provided by the department of education is rusted and unstable after years of use. My children and I would be very grateful for a donation of quality dry-erase markers, and a sturdy classroom white board.
