Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are not only scientists during our brief weekly science block but are constantly questioning the world around them.
While curious, many students have not had the opportunity to thoroughly investigate the scientific phenomena that surround them.
The majority come from disadvantaged homes that lack educational materials and resources. It is also difficult for my students to build real world experience due to their socio-economic status. They do not have the luxury of visiting museums, science centers, or natural wonders. I do my best to bring these experiences to my students but would greatly benefit from more resources.
My Project
By bringing in numerous scientific texts and materials, my students will have the opportunity to build their knowledge base in concepts such as objects in motion, life cycles, and rocks. Rather than limiting their exposure to scientific material during our minimal science block, the new books will offer the opportunity to access information during our language arts block. We will use our reading skills to interpret the material and learn comprehension strategies to analyze informational text. We can then engage in hands-on activities using the new resources during our science time. Imagine learning the strategies to decode information about fossils during language arts, and then applying that new information to sorting and charting fossils during science!
Rather than my students being confined to the principles of science for only 30 minutes a week, my students will be able to access this information across the curriculum.
They will not be limited by the dry, outdated science textbook that we currently have in our classroom. The introduction of new and engaging texts will stimulate their interest and the hands-on resources will enrich and extend their understanding!
