Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of the students on our campus do not have access to even the most basic technology. By the end of the school year, I would like for my students to be able to work on one digital project per chapter we study, so that they have continued practice working online and with word processing.
Over 50 percent of the students on our campus come from homes where English is not their primary language.
In addition, many students do not have access to the Internet at home, nor do they have tools to use technology. The teachers on our campus are working to provide devices that can help our students be able to complete projects that they otherwise would not be able to do at home, but we lack the funds to purchase enough devices to resolve this issue. WIth the addition of a laptop to my room, I have one more tool to help my more needy students to get work done that they otherwise would not complete. One more device in my room means that I can work to create more projects where my students can have more practice with researching, creating digital portfolios and becoming more confident with computers.
My Project
There are so many reasons that a MacBook Air laptop would be beneficial to my room. First, with each chapter we study, I have created digital assignments that I would like for each of my students to complete. The addition of a laptop to my room means that more students will be able to work on these projects during class under my supervision. In addition, I will be able to assign these projects because I will have the tools to make sure that it's possible for the work to be completed. Next, this year, it is a school wide goal for each of our students to develop websites in class. The students will be able to use the laptop to upload their videos and other files to their websites. Finally, students have access to checking their grades, printing reports and other basic features a computer can provide. Since these are luxuries in most of their homes, it's nice to be able to provide the tools to make their attempts at academic success easier.
A new laptop means that one more group assignment can be completed.
A new laptop means that students can be responsible for their learning. A new laptop means that students can practice basic word processing skills. A new laptop means that I am one step closer to pushing my classroom into a proper 21st century learning environment. Students are excited when they get their hands on technology, and I'm excited to be able to try and help them!
