One of my favorite quotes is "the greatest gift is a passion for reading," spoken by Elizabeth Hardwick. Every day, the students I work with struggle with reading and find reading tedious, but with the right support and resources, I truly believe they will reach their goal of being life long readers and learners.
My 60 students are hard-working and persevere even when learning is difficult for them.
I have the joy of teaching second grade part of my day. The remainder of my day is reaching different learners every half hour, kindergarten through fifth grade. Group sizes vary from 2 to 16, depending on need. Over half of them are English learners or have limited vocabularies and language. When walking into my Title I classroom, you would discover risk-takers performing in a safe environment where they are not afraid to play with language.
Our school has a supportive RTI team striving hard to identify student needs and pinpoint with ever-increasingly accuracy which intervention is right for the student. Due to the “can do” attitude of my students, I truly believe every child will reach their goal of being life-long learners.
My Project
The MacBook will be used in my classroom for daily learning experiences.
A MacBook will provide my learners will multiple ways to interact with their learning.
Students will use iMovie to create presentations based on our school-wide positive discipline approach. Using the Pages app, my second grade students will be able to create multimedia reports. The Keynote software will allow reading content to be presented in a more concise manner than our textbook, and allow me to embed SDAIE and other English language learner strategies to enhance the curriculum. GarageBand will allow students to come up with phonics-based songs to remember and recall sounds they are taught.
Finally, iBooks will expand my classroom library ten-fold. Immediate access to texts at multiple levels will support all my learners.
