My students need a laptop for whole-class instruction and seamless lesson delivery.
Help the students in my exceptional education classroom succeed in the general education classroom!
I teach 6th graders that attend a Title I, inner-city, public school in a low socioeconomic area, where they crave technology and stimulating resources that are not available to them through no fault of their own.
Being an exceptional education teacher, I am responsible for students that struggle writing and know only a few sight words (some do not recognize the word "the") when they enter middle school. Their potential is great, but their reading deficits suppress their performance in all subjects.
My school and students are at the epicenter of education reform. The school is located in Memphis with all students receiving free lunch. The school is in a turnaround and is developing new teachers. We are trying to create an engaging and collaborative community among teachers and among students. With apprentice teachers, we need additional resources.
I am requesting a laptop computer for my classroom. As the name of my class states, I provide resources to help my students be successful in their general education math classes. The single most important resource is a fast computer. This laptop has a Solid State Drive which will enable the computer to boot up instantly and load software and websites at amazing speeds. Students themselves will have access to websites and software such as Reading Plus, Failure Free Reading, Stanford's EPGY, and InteractMath to remediate skills. I currently have four computers in our classroom, two of which do not work, while the other two are hopelessly outdated. If a student needs to work on a project, they cannot do so in my room. As a result, they often do not get the work completed, or do not produce quality work. Furthermore, due to the financial needs of my students, most do not have access to technology at home so the exposure in my class is all they get.
Access and equity are incredibly important to a functioning, democratic society.
In order for my students to have any chance at meeting their attainable goals, they need to have exposure to today's technology. Because most do not have this opportunity at home, my class is the only chance they have to obtain these vital skills and resources. If you choose to fund this project you will be doing a small part in making our society more equitable.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
