My students need a class set of math games, dice and cards for engaging ways to become fluent at their multiplication facts. After they learn their facts, this project will motivate them to achieve mastery.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What is one word that is sure to make fourth and fifth grade teachers and students shiver and cry? Multiplication! With the lack of parental support at home and video games being so interesting, teachers like me are trying to get the "buy-in" from students to know their multiplication facts.
My teaching partner and I became one of the few true co-teach models in our school in fourth grade.
We set up our classroom in two different rooms. One for seat work and one open-concept classroom. We believe that students like to have varied surrounding to complete and focus on learning tasks. We centered our classroom around high-achievement and teamwork. Now I will tell you a little about the population in this classroom. Twenty-one students out of thirty-nine, speak another language at home fluently (including Spanish and Vietnamese). We have a variety of learning needs. We have students that have language goals (4/39), identified learning disabilities (4/39), IEPs for AGP (6/39), articulation (1/39), 504 plans (5/39), receives free or reduced lunch (36/39) and ELL support (9/39). Exactly 12/39 students have been retained in previous years in their elementary career (one student has been retained twice). About 75% of our students are below level in at least one area.
My Project
Since students don't have the resources and support at home to learn their multiplication facts, the students voluntarily come back to class for "Lunch-N-Learn." This gives all students an opportunity to get help from me and other students towards their fact fluency. We don't have games or anything interactive so now they are becoming bored with the few things we have. The playing cards alone are great for games like multiplication war. The flash cards (multiplication on one side and division on the other) are great because it can be used to hide a dividend, divisor, quotient, product or even the factor. It makes them not just think about the "answer" but how the number work together. Some students like learning alone so the electronic games are great for students that are too embarrassed to work with a group. The goal is that they will gain confidence and join the other games.
Think about how much you use multiplication on a daily basis.
How did you learn it? Did you learn it? Now, I want to be the support that these students need. They sacrifice their own free time because they WANT to be successful in fourth grade and beyond. The fifth grade teachers have expressed concerns that the kids just are struggling with multiplication! I want them to not sweat basic facts and show off their true talent. All I need to do is make it more interesting and motivating!
