Our students are getting a hands-on experience of American History. They have created their own Constitutions, countries, Bill of Rights, Pledge of Alliance, flag and etc. as if they were at the Constitutional Convention. Plus, they get additional help from state and national political leaders who come to speak to our class, This helps my students to understand how government functions.
We are an inner-city school with 100% students on free breakfast and lunch.
We have desks that are falling apart and chairs that are breaking. Despite their environment, our students are eager to learn and have a bright future.
The students will get first hand interactions with current State legislatures on policies and issues concerning our State. This will help our students in the future as some have expressed interest in running for public office. Having our students interact with elected officials will show they care about public education and students' futures.
Our students will be future leaders and what better experience to expose them to how government functions by interacting with the individuals who make the decisions that impact their lives.
Our trip will involve taking students to the Oklahoma State Capitol where they will meet with elected officials. The second part of the day, the students will go to the Governor's Mansion and have the opportunity to tour the Mansion and have lunch with the Governor.
