As a speech and language pathologist in a low-income/high poverty school district and in an alternative special education learning center, I see my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. To combat the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things positive and exciting for my school's energetic, eager, and enthusiastic learners.
Every day, my goal is to be sure the students do not feel the challenges that they face at home while they are at school.
This group of students inspire me to not only be the best educator possible but to be the best person possible. Our students are always willing to help each other and try their hardest to be dedicated students. Every day is more exciting than the next as I watch my students grow as learners and future contributing citizens.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. During classroom lessons and story time, they can choose a location in the school library that allows them to show their best learning. Currently, our students are choosing to work in a variety of locations within classrooms such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to learn. I have noticed amazing differences in students when they are given a choice in their seating. They are increasingly engaged and complete more work than when they are simply sitting at their desks.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The different options for seating will allow students who need to wiggle, do so, and/or need grounding on the floor, have that option as well. The comfy floor seats and the beanbag chairs will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. All chairs are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more in our new library.
