Lumina Foundation: College Preparatory Instruction

The Lumina Foundation has agreed to fund projects for teachers teaching AP courses. I have decided to accept the challenge. I teach AP English Literature and Composition in an inner-city high school, one which has been targeted for the Advanced Placement Incentive Program--a grant program targeted at increasing the number of low-income, high risk students in AP classes.

Because of the location of the school, and the fact that the Administration has expended funds primarily for High School Transformation (a grant program funded by Bill and Melinda Gates with the intentions of improving the academic standards of inner-city youth), few funds are available to fund programs such as Advanced Placement classes.

I have written a syllabus that was approved by the College Board as meeting the requirements of a college level course (i.e. having the level of rigor). Because I do not have the texts, I have chosen a novel approach using classical novels and texts--what the College Board considers "Approved Authors." One text that I have written on my syllabus (but do not have)is a non-fiction piece by James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time. I would also like to have the students read the novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

Your contribution will give the students a well-rounded program. My intentions are that the students are "college ready"--able to transition into college with the necessary skills to succeed. Having this rigor will ensure that.
