My English 9 students attend a competitive, high performing school. Most of them are planning to attend college upon their graduation from high school. They all work really hard to be successful. My student range from reluctant to voracious readers. I am adding more independent reading to allow student choice, which I am hoping leads to more excited readers.
My goal is to introduce a reading habit in the busy lives of my students.
There is a lot of talk that “students today won’t read,” but I truly believe students substitute distractions (texting, social media, video games, TV, etc.) if they feel no passion for reading. It has been my experience, students who have not been readers since early elementary school will suddenly become quite passionate about reading with the right book in their hands.
Reading is a foundational skill for leading a literate life. There are a number of reasons why students should become avid readers. Chief among them is the ability to use metacognition. This is the conversation readers have with themselves about what they are reading. Metacognitive readers enjoy reading because they can find meaning in texts and think deeply to comprehend what they’re reading.
My Project
My English 9 classes need some new books for our class library. It is important that my students are able to make decisions about what they read. I am hoping to be able to offer them fresh new choices. Some requested titles include All American Boys, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, Before I Let Go, Hate List, and This Is Where It Ends.
Several of my students are voracious readers and I can’t keep up with their appetite for great new books.
I would like to be able to provide them with high interest titles that they are excited to devour!
I have chosen books with intrigue, love stories and humor. I have chosen books with both male and female points of view. There is something on this list for every reader.
