Presently, my students share one very old desktop computer. It's not printer friendly so when they have their three minute time slot, they must write what they see on the screen.
My students are FABULOUS!
I really believe one of them could grow up to become the next governor of any state in the union or even uncover some major archaeological dig in Peru. They are so inquisitive and think so deeply. They have the same wants, hopes and dreams of so many students. They just happen to live in a remote, rural area in Illinois which should not be a factor in holding them back!
It's so interesting to watch this group of kids. They know what resources we have available to use. They just know that they get three minutes on the present computer and they time themselves. There is no bickering. They just seamlessly share. And! When someone may need more time for a project or something, I see students offer their times to one another. They solve interpersonally without any interventions required from me. It is heart warming but more than that, it gives me hope for our future. Our present politicians could learn so much from these kids in Illinois City!!
My Project
We need a laptop computer and printer that will give our students more time to unveil the possibilities that lie outside of our area. It will also help them to learn how to study spreadsheets, profit/loss statements and goal setting for their popcorn and bracelet business they are preparing to begin in March.
We are planning for our business now and will begin hands on selling the second week in March. At present, we must just talk about the process but a computer could show them graphics, allow them to input their own data, analyze their possibilities and track their income on their own.
This laptop computer can be the key to expose my students to real world foundational financial skill sets.
In addition, it could help them to further their own team building, goal setting and possibility seeking opportunities. Remember! A mind is a terrible thing to waste!
