Our students are of middle and high school age, and have severe, as well as severe and multiple disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, visual impairments, deaf/blindness, congenital syndromes, and intellectual disabilities. Many are non-verbal and non-ambulatory, and many have both physical and cognitive impairments.
Our school is part of District 75, which includes all public schools in NYC exclusively for students with disabilities.
Our students who are non-verbal and semi-verbal use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices, picture symbols, gestures, and vocalizations in school and at home in order to communicate with others. These methods help them to connect to and participate in the world around them, giving them a voice. Our students are truly unique and wonderful.
My Project
My students and their friends will benefit from a fun and engaging prom experience, and a luau seemed like the perfect theme to be high interest and meaningful! For the first time, students from another of our school high school sites will be coming to join us for prom, so everyone will be able to practice communicating and socializing in a large group with some new friends!
These decorations will help to bring the theme to life, providing them with sensory experiences to show them what a luau is really like.
The decorations we have chosen are bright and engaging, benefiting students who have visual impairments. All of our students also need visual cues and representations in order to make a possibly new concept, such as a luau, more tangible and easier to understand and connect with. We can't wait!
