The students that I work with have emotional and/or behavioral problems. They sometimes lack skills to self regulate their emotions and control their behaviors. Many students have had trauma in their lives and school is often the only consistency that they have. Some students are in special education, while others are struggling with their home life, which affects their school performance.
I have a 5th grade student who has no friends and lacks social skills.
I have another student who has emotional breakdowns daily because he lacks the skills to regulate his emotions. Other students that I work with have difficulty controlling their behaviors, their anger, their emotions, their attention.
Many of our parents cannot afford outside therapy, so they rely on the school to provide social emotional support to their child. School is a place that they come to everyday, and we are often the first resource for these students to learn how to control their social emotional functioning.
My Project
My students will use games and books to help improve their social emotional functioning and classroom behaviors. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their young lives and this creates difficulty with learning. When a child's most basic needs are not being met, it's difficult to learn. My students need coping skills to be able to handle their emotions and behaviors and to one day become productive citizens of our community.
The games and books that I have chosen will make it a fun and memorable experience to learn coping strategies and skills to improve their emotional functioning.
The games help them to remember what they have learned, as they experience fun with their peers.
I have worked with struggling students for the past 15 years and lack resources to help them on their journey of healing and developing life skills. I will use these resources to help my students to build the steps to success.
