Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in inner-city neighborhoods, known for gang violence and drug activity. These are really hard neighborhoods to grow up in, much less be able to focus on getting an education. But, my students have made a commitment to their future and are determined to become the first in their families to go to college. They attend a 6-12 grade secondary charter school on a University of California campus.
Our school’s mission is to prepare low-income, first-generation, highly motivated students to enter a four-year college or university upon graduation.
Our students attend an extended school day and year and take eight classes a semester with a rigorous single-track college preparatory curriculum. The student body is ethnically diverse and lives throughout the county, representing over 40 different zip codes. Students ride multiple modes of transportation to commute to our small school. I'm proud to serve 818 students this year.
My Project
Our students took a technology survey at the start of the year and we found out that about 20% do not have reliable, consistent access to technology at home. Forty-two students did not have any technology whatsoever. Twenty-two students used a cell phone to do school work. One Hundred and Nine students had some sort of technology at home but had to share it with at least four other people.
My goal is to connect more students with a computer, laptop, or Chromebook so they can do homework, study, and complete college and scholarship applications.
This project will help with this goal by adding six Chromebooks to our library inventory (we currently have five old laptops). School counselors and advisory teachers can refer needy students to check these Chromebooks from the library. These Chromebooks would especially be helpful for those students who have long commutes to school (over an hour by bus) since they are lightweight and can be taken home with ease. These Chromebooks would also help those students who can't afford internet access at home since they can take the Chromebook to a public library, Starbucks, or other cafe/restaurant with free wifi after school in order to complete and submit assignments online.
Our teachers are using a lot of technology in their classrooms, ranging from Albert I.O., Khan Academy, IXL, Google Classroom, and Edmodo. Every high school student applies to scholarships, summer enrichment programs, and eventually- college and financial aid. Most of these applications are completed online. In order for my students to be academically successful and pursue their goals of higher education, they need access to technology at home and that is where donors can help!
