I teach art to high school students in a very rural area of southwest Virginia. Funding for our school system is small and the budget given to arts is smaller. Students in this low-income area are not provided with the same opportunities as other counties in Virginia and every year I try to give them the best I can.
My students love to create and express themselves through visual art.
At this time, we are limited to pencil drawings, some colored pencil, and rare occasions where acrylic paint is used. We rely mainly on donations to fund any type of project.
My dream is to have an art room for these students that rivals even the best in the state, but we cannot get there without help from people like you.
My Project
Students here don't get to paint often. This is mainly because of our small budget versus the cost of materials. It makes it very difficult to branch out from colored pencils and graphite. Even those simple materials are running low.
Bring more creativity to these students.
They need the opportunity to paint, sculpt, and print. These all come at a cost we just cannot afford. These children deserve the best and I hope to give that to them. In our small room, easels, like the ones on our list, would make the students feel more like artists. We are in great need of a variety of brushes. The ones we currently use are quite old and becoming thin from wear and use. Fan brushes would be an amazing tool for these students because we currently have none. The students need canvases to paint on instead of the paper we have (which was never meant for that use.) Even basic materials such as markers, erasers, and glue are running low in the classroom and need to be restocked.
