Loving Our Libraries More with an Inviting Reading Corner!
My students need rugs, comfortable chairs, tables and other items to create a comfortable reading and listening station in the library to encourage a love of reading and promote a positive relationship with the library.
I work at 2 small elementary schools in our district. The students at our local schools are small-town kids. They are so close to their peers, and their bonds are strong. It's a close-knit community with great parent involvement. I am constantly amazed at how supportive they are of each other.
When we complete STEM challenges, my students cheer each other on even when it means they themselves might not be the "winner." These kiddos are strong individually but are even stronger as a group, and I believe they have a great advantage in coming from such a small, close community.
The safety and stability of this small town allow these kids to step outside their comfort zones and try things they might otherwise be timid or too self-conscious to try. They have so much potential to use their community strength to achieve great things and push the boundaries of learning. I'm inspired every day by their sense of community at such a young age.
My Project
New comfortable seating areas in our libraries will provide a positive and inviting atmosphere for students to fully enjoy and immerse themselves in books whether they be hard copy or digital. A charging cart will allow students to use their iPads for apps like epic! and other immersive reading experiences. A full set of headphones will allow students with all reading abilities to listen to books as well as read along so that every reader can enjoy books. The rug and flexible seating options will allow them to find a spot that is comfortable and encourages a positive relationship with reading. I just know they will be more excited to come to the library and read with a new reading corner!
I believe this project will add to their sense of community by giving them an area to gather and support each other in their reading goals.
It will also encourage them to find their own ways to be comfortable with reading. I don't want reading to be a chore for any of my students; I want it to be something that brings them joy. This reading corner will be a station among 3 other library stations that students will rotate through so that all students will get a chance to use this station regularly. I expect it will be the favorite spot!
