My Students

Teaching in low income community is tough. Students are often faced with coming to school hungry, not having support to get homework or projects completed, or not having basic school supplies. Making sure that these students feel safe and helping to make them see the value of a good education is the most important part of my job. Knowing that I can provide this to these students is what keeps me going every day and what makes me strive to be the best I can be to these students. Having grown up not too far from this community and having faced some of these difficulties when I was a student, I know the power of a good teacher and how a teacher can be the best mentor to open doors for a child.

My Project

Teaching students to be excited about reading is hard; it's even harder when your classroom library is limited. If students are not excited about reading in elementary school, they can struggle with it throughout their education. I want my students to be so interested in a book, that they can't put it down. Having a wide range of classic, high interest, and low level books will encourage my struggling readers to keep reading and will give stronger readers more options.

Many of the books I have have been handed down to me from teachers retiring, yard sales, clearance isles in stores, and library discard piles and have seen better days.

I have ordered new books from book clubs, but with my own money, and as a teacher with a small salary, that is often a challenge. Having books that are new and just for our class will hopefully give students some pride and excitement and create a sense of community in my mixed grade level class.
