Mrs. Hecker from Clairton PA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need mentor texts, books on CD that build phonemic awareness, and a headphone splitter for their listening center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This year my goal is to help my students improve their reading and writing skills by using mentor texts in the classroom. I hope to inspire and encourage my students to become more creative and thoughtful writers. I hope to expose my students to a deeper appreciation to the art of writing.
My students are in 2nd grade and live in a diminutive, suburban public school district in Pennsylvania.
Due to 85% of the student population falling below the poverty level and receiving free and reduced lunch they do not have the advantage of technology in the classroom. They enjoy the use of technology to manipulate the lessons that we discuss during our classroom learning time. By utilizing technology, it will give them the ability to achieve on various levels. Their social skills are developed during our classroom time and their technological skills will be utilized during our small group learning centers.
These students are free thinkers and are eager to learn and move forward. Giving them the tools to connect reading and writing together will give them the focus and structure to create their own new and exciting ideas. Using the requested mentor texts will act as a tool to inspire students to create imaginative and original writing pieces of their own. The mentor text stories will be used as an anticipatory set to expose students to a variety of literature pieces and reading/writing skills. Students will then be able to create their own pieces of literature by reflecting back on the specific skills taught. By providing students the opportunity to listen to books on CD and increase their phonemic awareness, students will feel a sense of achievement while exploring reading. Students will have the opportunity to choose a book on cd and read along with the author. By listening to a story with another child, students are provided the opportunity to share thoughts, feelings, and questions.
Due to the budget impasse this project will help fund items needed to help students normally provided by state funds.
This project will contribute to the students phonemic awareness, fluency, and in the writing process. Students will be able to collaborate with their classmates to explore a variety of books on CD.
