I teach eighth grade English at a very high-needs school in Southeast Washington, DC. My students are reading an average of 4.5 years behind. Nevertheless, my students are very excited and curious about reading! My students often ask for book recommendations and to borrow my personal books. However, due to the lack of resources at our school, my students do not have access to high-interest books. There is no library at our school. I currently have about 40 books in my classroom. The majority of the books are outdated and missing pages and/or covers. In my classroom, I want my students to develop an appreciation and love for reading. Reading and reading comprehension are imperative skills that my students will need to have in order to be successful in high school and in life. As a result, I want to create a class library with high-interest books for my students. I would like a collection of high-interest books to start a class library. I am requesting various copies of 23 books from high-interest authors such as Sharon Flake, Walter Dean Meyers, Nikki Grimes, Sharon Draper, Angela Johnson and Alice Walker. I am dedicated to improving my students' reading abilities. Thank you for taking the time to consider this proposal.
