Loving Literacy

Help me give my students books, book bags, book tubs, a reading clock, reading journals, and a table with seasonal tablecloths to keep these literacy supplies on.

My Students

I have been at the same elementary school for the last 23 years and in the same classroom for most of that time teaching first, second, and third graders, sometimes all at once! I have 23 super second graders this year, many of them siblings or cousins of students I have had in the past. What an exciting thing it is to be working in a community that has so much continuity. I love having former students walk in and tell me that they have just graduated and what colleges they are attending or what other plans they have for their futures. They look around the room and say things like, "I remember you teaching me to paint!" or "That was one of my favorite books!" or "Do you still have literacy centers?"

This year's students love reading stations, literacy centers, teacher read-aloud time, and independent reading - basically anything to do with reading.

In my research I have come across some exciting reading ideas I would love to implement this year.

My Project

Learning how to read is one of the most important skills anyone will ever acquire. I believe it is also important to LOVE reading and encourage the love of reading from a very early age. With that end in mind, I would like to set aside a portion of my classroom dedicated solely to reading.

I envision a kid-friendly reading table with seasonal tablecloths to draw them in.

Each child would have a white bag on this table with his/her name on it full of books that he/she is interested in reading. There would be tubs to hold reading journals, sticky notes, pencils, markers, and crayons so students can keep track of their reading and thinking. Magnets would be in one tub so children can use them to post ideas and book recommendations on the white board above the table. A camera and alarm clock would be in another tub so students can capture their reading memories and track their reading time. A fit board would be made available for those kids who want more movement while reading.
