Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a very special charter school. It is located in one of the poorest congressional districts of the United States. In this community, 35% of the families earn less than $15,000 per year and almost 50% of children in our area live in poverty. 94% of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. My school has a large focus on the character development of students, parents, and teachers. The partnership between families is unlike anything I have ever seen in any other school; this type of environment allows the students to be extremely successful. My students have a passion for learning across many disciplines and especially enjoy using reading texts that they can see themselves in and writing stories about their own lives.
My Project
My students need engaging and culturally relevant read aloud books to help foster their love of literacy! All of the books included in this project will become mentor texts that our classroom community will refer to often to foster a love of literacy and social and emotional development. Particularly, these books will help students to want to start something new (even if it is a little bit scary), develop strategies to be at peace within themselves, find story ideas, and a love of all words (even if they seem a bit tricky at first). I can't wait to unveil these books to my students to help develop a community that loves literacy!
