I will begin a new journey as a full day preschool teacher this week in a large urban school district in a diverse neighborhood. I am so excited to have more time with my students each day to watch them grow and learn. I had the opportunity to meet many of my students last week at the schools open house. I will have some children with prior preschool experience and some children who will be attending school for the first time. Students in my classroom have a variety of home languages.
Early Childhood Education is so important.
Children come to learn social-emotional as well as academic pre-readiness skills. These skills are learned through play, singing, listening to stories, dancing, and other activities that are essential to early childhood development.
My Project
I am so excited to be working in one of the brand new preschool classrooms in my district. At my prior school, I had a lending library for my students where they could check out a book and bring it home to read with their families. I hope I can bring a library like this to my new classroom.
Literacy is so important and children need to be read to on a daily basis.
The lending library helps bring a fresh book home to be read and enjoyed by the child's family with the child. I am requesting favorite books such as "Press Here," which we read aloud as a "Magic Show" and "The Neighborhood Mother Goose," which teachers many old nursery rhymes with photographs of children in urban environments. I tried to pick a variety of books so that families may have new experiences with books they are not familiar with. I also requested hardcover books so hopefully they will last for years to come.
