My students need literacy materials (books, storyboard white boards, games) for centers and our library! These materials will promote independence, confidence and a love of literacy for all my scholars, no matter what level they are at.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My little scholars are already college bound and know the year they will graduate, 2033! They work hard each day to grow their brains at our very rigorous charter school. Our school is located in an urban area and more than 98% of our scholars qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our mission is to ensure that scholars get the foundational skills they need to go on to attend and graduate from a four-year university. Our work is focused on closing the achievement gap for children in traditionally under served communities.
My Project
Center time is our favorite time! My little scholars love centers! It gives them a chance to engage with their peers, build on their skills and foster independence. Centers are fun and engaging and a great way for them to keep learning.
As one can imagine, we have a great variety of skills in our class.
The challenge in any classroom, especially kindergarten, is to meet individual needs of each child. Each day during guided reading, I have different centers set up that include word work, writing, fine motor, independent reading, buddy reading and poetry. Having a variety of center materials will help my scholars to not just enjoy their center time even more, but allow them to build confidence knowing they can do these activities on their own. They love challenges and the materials I chose will help them continue to grow at every level and enhance their literacy skills. Having these skills and foundations will only further our mission of to and through college!
