I teach on a military post. I teach Army kids. Either one or both of the students' parents are in the Army. I have high achieving students, average students, and below level students. My students work hard, and education is important to them and their parents. Some students work harder than others, and some have better work habits than others.
My students also have outstanding behavior and citizenship traits.
The most difficult part for my students is when my students have to deal with a parent being deployed. They usually are deployed for one year, and that is a stressful time for a child.
My Project
These books are highly engaging. If students are going to become lifelong readers they have to be introduced to books that will hold their attention. My students will love to read all of these books because they are awesome books. We will use the books in small groups. Once they are finished with one book they will be able to switch books with another group and read more. Each student will have to perform one of five tasks, inquisitive questioner, artful artist, vocabulary wizard, passage picker, and creative connector. The students will assign pages to read on their own and they will meet back together and discuss their answers to their tasks.
Also, I would love to provide a copy of each book to the students on the Battle of the Books team.
We will be using the books in the city-wide Battle of the Book competition. We will be more successful if each student has a book to read and review.
