Our elementary school is truly a remarkable place for students and families. It is proud to be one of Boston’s most racially diverse public schools, with a student body that is 30% Latinx, 23% white, 22% African American, 20% Asian and 5% multi-racial. 24% of our students are students with disabilities and 41% are English Language Learners. Many families at the school face economic challenges and nearly half our families live in public housing. The diversity in the school reflects the diversity in the Charlestown community with 70% of the students at our school living in Charlestown.
My Project
This school year, we have been adding quality books to our classroom library that promote cultural awareness, diversity, and global awareness. In literacy class, we work extensively on learning about the meanings of individual words and what they mean within the text we are reading. We also learn how multisyllabic words are divided into syllables so we can practice reading and spelling new words.
These books would give the students an opportunity to acquire unfamiliar words to add to their working vocabulary.
Our class would like to add sets of culturally appropriate books to our library so that when we return to school, we will be able to read these books in person and put them physically in our hands.
This project is all about our students and the good quality books they will be sharing that promote individual differences. It is important for our population of students to admire their classmates for their unique qualities so we can learn more about our similarities and differences. It will be exciting to add more diverse books to our classroom library!
