Lovers of Reading All Their Lives

The cost of supplemental, leveled reading material for first graders is $583, including shipping and <a target="new" href="" onclick="g_openWindow('', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

The best thing about teaching young children is the opportunity to assist them in developing a love of reading and writing. My first graders already love to write. After 30 minutes of Writers Workshop they will often beg, "Ten more minutes? Could we please have just ten more minutes of writing time?" I want these capable writers to fall as deeply in love with reading as they already have with writing. The Readers Workshop model of teaching is the best way to ensure the development of a life-long love of reading. While the teacher is working with a small group of learners with similar needs, the remainder of the class is meaningfully engaged in reading a variety of books at their independent reading level. Young children, when given the opportunity to read material that is geared to their particular developmental ability, naturally want to read more. Because they feel like successful readers already, their current success lays the groundwork for future successes. The funds I am requesting would allow us to begin gathering the books needed to begin Readers Workshop this school year, providing 90 books at the varied reading levels of my students. When children have the opportunity to blossom and grow as readers in a developmentally appropriate way, it is a gift that will stay with them for a lifetime. Please help me to provide my students with this gift.
