Love Yourself: A Handful of Tools to Support Self Worth
Help me give my students yoga balls to support those who need to fidget, three great books about metacognition and a motivational poster to greet students as they enter my classroom.
Our school is situated on the California coast, just south of San Francisco, in a tiny community better called a village than a town. Our students are the children of NASA engineers, farm workers, carpenters, restaurant servers, Silicon Valley bigwigs, nurses, and housekeepers. In other words, we are a diverse group of people who learn from one another and build upon each other's life experiences to create new, amazing memories together.
My students are a motley crew; a veritable troupe of lost boys and girls ready for the adventure better known as first/second grade!
They are a song singing, play dough slinging, brick building, garden growing, story writing, book talking and soup making class of big personalities. Just like all public schools these days, we are a fun mix of kids with different strengths and challenges.
And we need your help.
My Project
Teacher know. Parents know. Sometimes school is hard. Sometimes sitting still or waiting for your turn or working on an assignment when all you want to do is play is torture for some children. I've found great success in having bouncy yoga ball chairs, wonderful read alouds and self talk mantras help these kids feel accepted and successful in the classroom.
Everyone deserves to feel a sense of self worth.
But sometimes the classroom is designed to make a few kids targets for constant correction. But yoga ball chairs help those kids to bounce when otherwise fidgeting would make seat work miserable. I have the chairs, but several of them have popped and need to be replaced. The books I've selected will help kids see that they are not the only ones who are challenged and that there are actually tools to help them. I can't wait to put the poster in my classroom door so kids can look at it as they wait for school to begin or as they play on the playground. The words are inspiring.
These materials will support the 23 kids in my room and for many students in the years to come.
