This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a diverse class of first-grade students in a city school. Our charter school is the largest in the city and students come from all areas of the city to attend. With class sizes of twenty-six students, it can sometimes be difficult to find the number of supplies and resources to differentiate instruction for all students.
The diversity of our school community is what makes it so unique.
We have students from many different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. This is why I want students to be able to share their perspective and feel as though what they add to the classroom is important.
My Project
I'm asking for materials to help me prepare independent learning centers for my students. Students often receive instruction in small groups with a teacher. But what do the other students do while they aren't working with a teacher? My goal is to make and organize meaningful games and activates for students to do to extend their learning when they work by themselves. Cardstock, laminate and hook in loop (velcro) will be used to make games for students to take and play. The games will be stored in the mesh zipper pouch bags on this list. I've also asked for a book called Grumpy Monkey.... just for a little bit of fun!
The centers I am planning will let children be the boss of their own learning.
In the centers, they will use the materials I have made with cardstock and laminate to explore reading and writing concepts. They will use laminated recording sheets to do their work with dry-erase markers. They will mix and match cards to play memory games. In a low-risk environment, students will feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes and develop synapses in the brain.
Lastly, in this time of distance learning, I am looking for ways to be productive and be an efficient teacher even when I am not in the school building. Getting these supplies now will help me prepare materials for my students to use when we can safely return to the classroom.
