This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a group of 4th graders who are curious, creative, and full of energy! We love to read and include reading all across the curriculum. Everyday we read aloud from a picture book and a chapter book, and we leave time for independent reading as well.
As the proverb goes: A child who reads becomes an adult who thinks.
I am a huge proponent of helping children grow into independent thinkers who are proactive members of society. I believe it is important for students to learn to stand up for themselves and speak their minds. As an educator, my goal is to get as many diverse books into my students' hands as possible. I want to help instill a love for reading and learning, and in turn help my students grow into strong thinkers.
My Project
We don't have a staffed library in our school, so my students are dependent on my classroom library (and my personal trips to the local library) for books to read. I try to stock my library many different ways- including library book sales, facebook marketplace, and donations from the community.
My goal is to stock my classroom library with high interest diverse books for independent reading.
The more options students have, the more likely they are to read. I chose both books students requested and books recommended by other educators to design this project.
