I was in early elementary school when I found my love of reading. That is one of the reasons that I love to teach first grade. It gives me an opportunity to share that excitement and joy of reading with my students.
My students are inquisitive, voracious learners who are craving to discover the newest adventures.
My students are enthusiastic learners, compassionate, and creative. However, many of them come from broken and trauma filled homes. They find their safe place at school and many times even in a book. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school library or my classroom library to check out high-quality books.
Right now, my classroom library is lacking in current high-interest text for young readers. I would love to provide my students with more books that will allow them to not only fall in love with reading but maybe get a chance to experience places, if even on pages, that they may never have the opportunity to go themselves.
My Project
With the help of these resources, I am able to support my students learning with engaging phonemic awareness texts. Teaching these skills can be boring in isolation, so having the opportunity to teach them in texts like Sheep in a Jeep and Fox on a Box, helps the students to understand the concept of rhyme and how vowels work together.
These resources will allow my students who may be early readers, get exposure to more engaging texts that they can read independently while still continuing to learn new reading skills like comprehension and decoding words.
