I am seeing a change in students this year as they have gone from not really interested in reading at all, to excited, book-loving readers who talk about books.
I have been able to motivate a lot of students to read this year.
Those who read are always asking me for more books and making lists of what they want to read next. I suggested a DonorsChoose project so that they could get the books they want to read and add to our class collection. However, not all the students share this love of reading, but I am always trying to make that book connection with them and having a wide variety of choices helps me do that.
Not only does reading improve their comprehension and vocabulary, it gives them a sense of accomplishment as they finish books and are able to share them excitedly with others. The more they read, the better they are able to understand the world around them, empathize with others, and see things in a different way.
My Project
I am always trying to make that book connection with my students and having a wide variety of choices helps me do that.
I have built a small classroom library where students can try new books and talk about them with their classmates to create a contagious love of reading.
For this project, they have chosen a variety of fiction and non fiction books that will appeal to a wide audience. Books like The Plot to Kill Hitler, Word Freak, and Fallout will create interest for students. I believe daily reading will improve their lives and their learning.
Not only does reading improve their comprehension and vocabulary, it gives them a sense of accomplishment as they finish books and are able to share them excitedly with others. The more they read, the better they are able to understand the world around them, empathize with others, and see things in a different way.
