My students need reading materials with current events and real life stories. They also need updated puzzles and manipulatives that are exciting and engaging.
Do you remember reading the Scholastic News and taking it home to share with your family? I want my students to have that same exciting experience to help motivate them and their families to read. Kindergarten should be a year filled with excitement for learning for both families and kids.
Our school is a public school in an urban setting in Wisconsin.
I will be co-teaching in my Kindergarten classroom with an Early Childhood Special Education teacher. Our students will be general education kindergarten students and students having identified special needs. Many students in our classroom come from homes of poverty. We have an ethnically diverse group of students who come to school to find routine, safety and trust. We like to make every student feel important and safe so that they can live up to their highest potential.
My Project
We need grade level subscriptions to The Scholastic News, updated puzzles and classroom materials for math and literacy. Due to the current situation with funding for school supplies, we have limited resources to update and supplement our tools for learning. We need to compete with the world of technology as we present toys and tools to our students. We need to have some spark to engage and excite them in their learning adventures. Students of today have an increased need to touch, feel and be part of their learning 'hands on'. By having more tools available for students to touch, learn and be excited about, we can hook them into learning so that they are motivated and excited to keep doing more. The home-school connection offered through the Scholastic News magazine is valuable to our entire population as we share the opportunities to read at home and school. This relationship is imperative in meeting the standards set forth in education today.
