Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an awesome class this year of students who LOVE to read! Most of my students do not have their own books at home. At the end of each school day, they beg to take books from our classroom library home. How can I refuse students who want to read?!
My students live in a high poverty area of Chicago.
Many of the 30 students in my classroom are reading below grade level. All of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and close to half of my students are English language learners. This group of students is incredibly sweet AND eager to learn!
My Project
I picked a mixture of graphic novels, scary books, and some fun science books. I have many classics in my library, but the books in the categories I have chosen literally have to be taped back together after so much use. I know that these books will be loved by my students this year, and for years to come.
In the neighborhood I teach in, students are faced with gang violence, drug dealers, difficult family situations, and other challenges that are hard to imagine.
This project is so important because books are a place that my students can escape to no matter what is going around them. Please help!
