Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of the students in our class are struggling readers and/or writers. Some of them have learning disabilities, some have recently come to the US, most are considered students who are at risk in the school setting. Almost all of them have lost the love of reading and writing somewhere along the way for a variety of reasons and we want to help them get it back or experience it for the first time and become lifelong readers, writers, thinkers, and creators!
My Project
Our students come to us as new high schoolers hating to read, write or both. We have been able to introduce our current students to new books and they have responded well, but they have not had anyone their age to talk to about what they have been reading and the connections they are making or the dreams that they are envisioning because we only have 1 copy of a book.
We are hoping that by having multiple copies of each title, we can have book clubs in each class where they can not only talk to and read with someone in their own class but also that they can connect to a group in a different class as well.
We have tried to choose books that will also challenge students to be more tolerant of others and see things from someone else's shoes. These are also characters that our students can connect with which will help them find the love of reading again.
