Many of my fifth grade students have yet to find the book that hooks them as a reader. Some are challenged by focus and others battle learning disabilities that make reading independently much more frustrating than enjoyable!
We are a class of 25 energetic fifth graders!
Many of the students in my classroom this year are fortunate to have spent at least three years at our school. However, like many schools in our district, the student population is quite transient. Our school community is dedicated to creating a positive atmosphere where personal growth and engaged learning happens every day.
My Project
I am asking for a starter pack of audio books as well as a pair of headphones that will be used at a listening station in my classroom. There are students in my classroom who have a hard time engaging during independent reading time. These students are not utilizing the independent practice time to enhance their love of literature and practice reading strategies investigated during classroom instruction. Instead, they are often fidgety and become the best models for avoidance strategies. I believe their reading level and their interest in literature is often mismatched. Being able to independently read and comprehend is a skill that should be enjoyed by all students. The classroom library and headphones will make it possible for struggling readers to independently engage in literature that is appropriate for their personal interest.
Once my struggling students have a chance to engage in a good book for themselves, I know it will turn them on to future reading.
The more you practice being a reader the better reader you will become!
