My students need 10 copies of each novel, "Love That Dog" and "Hate That Cat" both by Sharon Creech to enhance a unit on poetry.

At my public school, children are flexibly grouped based on their needs. I teach third grade literacy to 24 students, ranging from average to above average abilities.

It is challenging to increase students' reading levels as well as understanding with our limited resources. Most of our novels and other supplemental materials are very old and outdated. With many topics, such as poetry, we have no instructional materials with the exception of the basic reader.

I would use these 2 novels as a vehicle for teaching poetry. The novels are told totally in verse and focus on a boy who hates poetry until he is forced to study it in school. By reading these delightful books, students will develop an appreciation of verse as they learn the hows and whys of poetry.
