I live and work in the China Town of Houston. My students are 7 to 8 year olds from China, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, Columbia, Vietnam, and El Salvador. I teach them in Spanish Spanish. Yes, that's right. I teach Hispanic and non-Spanish speakers Spanish. My students come from all walks of life, first-time-going-to-school refugees to the children of successful business leaders. And they are all eager to learn. This year's focus is to incorporate more Science and Math into my reading block.
I recently purchased a collection of books that I had pictured integrating with Science concepts. Fortunately, they worked. My students come from limited life experiences, limited vocabulary and unfortunately that affects their reading and interest in Science.
By purchasing these Science books my students will fall in love with reading, laugh at Junie's silly conclusions in Math and Science class, and expand their vocabulary.
My students will read daily for a dedicated time to build stamina and create book reports that help foster joy for reading and comprehension skills. They will engage in conversations about the silly antics that happen in her life and reactions.
